With Goa making it to national headlines over the recent Facebook posting episode, Konkani actress Meenacshi Martins has come out openly, advocating censorship of social media, especially if posts “hurt the feelings of members of a community or region.”
Explaining her stance, she says, “As artistes we know how freedom is paramount but there are certain responsibilities that come with that, which need to be respected.”
The actress, whose Konkani film Gunajireleases next month, has joined the forum ‘Social media not a forum’ to spread hatred’, in which the forum will keep a tab over provocative viral content.

Meenacshi admitted that on numerous occasions she had been herself the victim of various personal attacks over social networking sites. She opines that the words are not as painful as the reality that there are people who hold skewed opinions.”
Admitting that there aren’t many Konkani films being made to reflect such technological realities, the actress hoped that from now on Konkani filmmakers would tackle such issues on screen.
When asked her take on the much talked of Sec 66A of IT Act, whether there’s a need to repeal or amend it, she refused to get into details, saying “I think the judges are there to decide that.”
This is not the first time wherein the actress has been vocal on a social issue. Earlier, she had lent support to the India Against Corruption movement. Prior to that, as member of the women’s commission, she was involved in the rehabilitation process of riot victims in Sanvordem.
“I have always been an activist. My father had joined Mahatma Gandhi’s 1942 Satyagraha movement as a student. I am a freedom fighter’s daughter, so I guess it’s natural to have this fighting spirit in me.”
